The Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative is an unprecedented
violence prevention collaborative effort that began in
1999. Grants totaling $145 million, to date, have
been distributed to 77 sites across the country.
The goals of SS/HS are to help students develop the
skill necessary to promote positive mental health,
engage in pro-social behavior, and prevent violent
behavior and drug use. These efforts focus on
ensuring that all students learn in a safe, disciplined,
and drug-free environment, and that grantees create an
infrastructure that will institutionalize and sustain
these services. Each grantee is implementing a
SS/HS comprehensive plan which addresses the following
six elements:
SAFE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT
VIOLENCE, ALCOHOL, AND OTHER DRUG PREVENTION
AND EARLY INTERVENTION
SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH PREVENTATIVE
AND TREATMENT INTERVENTION SERVICES
EARLY CHILDHOOD PSYCHOSOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL
DEVELOPMENT SERVICES
EDUCATIONAL REFORM
SAFE SCHOOL POLICIES
